Linux
I have used Linux on my main machine since November 2007, and switched completely in February 2008 - which means I've used it for about a year on my main machine. In that year I have gained a lot of experience, which some people never seem to gain. I've gone through a number of distros, but managed to end up on Arch, which I don't think I'll be changing from any time soon, if ever. I have used:
- Ubuntu
- Xubuntu
- Kubuntu
- Mythbuntu
- OpenSuSE
- Fedora
- Zenwalk
- Debian
I've dabbled with FreeBSD, but the BSDs mostly remain a mystery to me. I think Linux is currently the best choice for a desktop operating system out there, for a number of reasons.
- It's free - in both meanings of the word.
- 99% of the software is free too.
- It's stable
- It's secure
- Package management!
- Properly set up, it's also easy to use.
- Lower hardware requirements than Windows and Mac.
Et cetera. If you don't currently use Linux, but are curious, make sure to send me an email and I'll help in any way I can. Or, if you know me in person (you lucky person), just ask to have a play around with my laptop at some point and see if you'd be interested in trying it on one of your computers - will Linux for chocolate :)
